Camping with kids is a whole different ballgame. Gone are the days of tossing a sleeping bag in the trunk and winging it; now, embarking on a camping trip requires an entirely new level of organization and foresight. If you’re anything like me, camping with littles means planning for the best, prepping for the worst, and trying to enjoy the chaos somewhere in between. It involves creating checklists that account for every little detail—from snacks and games to extra layers for unpredictable weather. You find yourself packing an assortment of gear, ensuring that each child has their favorite stuffed animal and essential comfort items. The excitement of exploring the great outdoors intertwines with the need to keep an eye on little ones who are full of energy and curiosity. As you navigate through the challenges and joys of camping as a family, you also discover precious memories in the laughter shared around the campfire and the awe of stargazing under the vast night sky.
After a few (very humbling) family trips, here’s my go-to list of camping must-haves I will never leave home without.
1. 🧻 Wipes — ALL the Wipes
Not just for diaper changes. I bring a well-stocked diaper bag filled with essentials that go beyond just diapers and wipes. There are extra outfits for unexpected messes, snacks to keep little ones energized, and toys to keep them entertained during outings. I also pack a changing mat for convenience, hand sanitizer for hygiene, and a swaddle blanket that can double as a nursing cover or a comfy wrap. Every item is thoughtfully included to ensure that I am prepared for any situation that may arise while out and about with my child.
- Baby wipes
- Antibacterial wipes
- Face wipes
Because someone will eat a marshmallow off a stick they dropped in the dirt.
2. 🛏 A REAL Sleep Setup
Forget thinking they’ll “rough it.” My kids sleep best with:

- A familiar blanket or lovey
- A toddler travel bed or pack n’ play, which provides a safe and comfortable sleeping space for your little one while you are on the go, ensuring they can rest easily in unfamiliar surroundings.
- A white noise machine or portable fan to drown out camp noise (and bugs)
Sleep = sanity. For everyone.
3. 🧴 Bug Spray & Sunscreen
I bring both natural and baby-safe bug spray, plus stick sunscreen for easy application on squirmy toddlers, ensuring they are protected from insects and sunburn while enjoying their outdoor adventures.
Additionally, I always opt for products that are free from harsh chemicals, as this is essential for the delicate skin of little ones.
To make preparation even simpler, I suggest keeping it all in one “outdoor kit” so you’re not digging through bags, which can often lead to forgotten items or a last-minute rush.
Having everything organized and accessible means we can spend more time having fun in the sun and less time worrying about the essentials.
4. 🔦 Kid-Friendly Flashlights & Glow Sticks
Camping nights can be spooky for little ones, filled with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant animal calls that can ignite their imagination.
To help ease their fears and create a magical experience, give them a cozy sleeping bag, a flashlight to ward off imaginary shadows, and a few ghost stories that end with happy endings.
Encourage them to star-gaze and point out constellations, turning the night into an adventure rather than a fright.

- Their own mini flashlight or headlamp
- Glow sticks (clip them to zippers or shoes at night)
It’s fun and makes them easier to spot in the dark!
5. 👕 Extra Clothes… and Then Some
Between the mud, the bugs, the food, the lake — they’ll go through outfits faster than you think, often coming back from their adventures in a disheveled state.
To prepare for this chaotic yet exciting experience, I pack not just extra clothing but also a variety of options for different weather conditions, including lightweight rain jackets and sturdy shoes that can handle both wet and dry terrain.
Additionally, I include spare swimsuits for impromptu dips in the lake, along with plenty of towels and toiletries to freshen up afterward.
- 2x more clothes than I think I’ll need
- A wet bag for dirty laundry
- Extra socks (seriously… always)
6. 🍎 Simple Snacks + Favorite Foods
Kids can get picky when routines are off. I always pack:
- Familiar snacks (granola bars, crackers, fruit pouches)
- A few “treats” like s’mores supplies or campfire popcorn
- A cooler with pre-cooked food for fast meals
Hungry kids + campfire = disaster. Be ready.
7. 🎒 A Small “Mom Bag” Survival Kit
I keep this in arm’s reach at all times:
- Band-aids
- Travel thermometer
- Electrolyte powder
- Hand sanitizer
- Small toys or bubbles for distractions
Trust me, you’ll use it more than once.
8. 🧺 A Flexible Attitude
Honestly? This is the real essential.
Things will go wrong. Plans will change.
But some of our best family memories were made during the messy, buggy, imperfect moments.
Camping isn’t about doing it perfectly — it’s about being present, laughing through the chaos, and maybe even peeing in the woods together.
